Depression: How To Identify It In Yourself And The Beginning Of Self-Help

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Victor Barnes Firstly, are you really depressed? Here are some simple little tests to help decide: 1. (a)Do you get relief from talking a lot about your problems? Or (b)have you become uncommunicative and say very little about anything at all? 2. (a)Do you get relief and perk up when friends visit? Or (b) would you rather your friends stayed away? 3. (a)Do you attribute your depression to the ill-will, hostility or incompetence of others with whom you are currently involved in your work or personal life? Or(b) do you blame yourself almost entirely and think badly of yourself? If you answered yes to the second part (the bs) of these 3 questions then you might have very serious depression and should go see your doctor as soon as possible. If you said yes to the first part of these 3 questions or felt that neither part applied to you then you may have what used to be called “neurotic depression” and have a high chance of being helped by the methods in this program right now. This even simpler test can give you a clues as to whether or not you need help to deal with depression: 1. Have you been feeling sad or depressed virtually all of each day for at least 2 weeks? 2. Have you lost interest in the things that once interested you and in fact have lost interest in just about everything? If you answered yes to both of these questions then although the self help program may have a high chance of helping you, it is nevertheless very possible you suffer a major depressive illness and should consider seeing a mental health professional for further assessment. For a more comprehensive but still brief free test for depression you could go here: www.psychologynatural.com/depressionselfasst.html 2. Reactive depression. I call it bad luck depression. If you are sacked from your job especially when you have a big credit card or other debts and obligations, if you are going through divorce or your business has failed, or if your house has just burned down or your superannuation funds have collapsed, you failed your exams, or youve lost a court case, or your children have been in trouble with the police or school then you can expect to be depressed! How serious is reactive depression? Once the life crisis passes we usually make a recovery and become our old selves. Nevertheless it can be severe enough to lead to suicide and if the stress goes on too long the depression sometimes becomes endogenous and hard to shift. We become chronically depressed and negativistic, cant shake ourselves out of it and treatment becomes necessary. Recognising the depression and following this program could help a lot. If youve been daydreaming about suicide as a way to end the suffering and the dilemmas in your life then you must go and see a mental health consultant. There are 2 special kinds of reactive depression that need to be mentioned, and because they are special, and severe, the DSM1V puts them in a category of their own, even though at a common-sense level they are forms of reactive depression - because they result from meeting unfortunate and unhappy circumstances. These are bereavement with consequent grief, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The grief of bereavement can be very long lasting and sometimes needs medical intervention. The support of family and friends is important. Face to face counselling is strongly recommended. The support of a religious or positive life philosophy also helps many people deal with their grief. Dont go it alone. With regard to posttraumatic stress syndrome, face to face intervention is needed. If you have flash backs to the time of a horrifying or life threatening event, avoid associated places and situations and have a fearful pessimistic view of your own future then it is likely you have posttraumatic stress disorder. Once again, you must not go it alone but rather consult your doctor or mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist as soon as possible. The bottom line to genuine posttraumatic stress disorder is that it needs medical intervention and long term monitoring. Clinical Depression This term really means that you are not just naturally down because of the mortgage payments, the bill from the vet and the bad report card your child brought home but that you do indeed have depression to the extent that it can be considered an illness because it is a source of suffering and interfering with your productivity and enjoyment of life. However, if you find you cheer up when agreeable company calls, that you seem to get relief by talking a lot about your problems, and perhaps can identify people in your life who you think (rightly or wrongly) are committed to making you miserable or undermining you then your depression is unlikely to be the most serious type. Some sufferers of depression are described as “cyclothymic”, “bipolar”, or “manic-depressive”. The term cyclothymic is likely to be used for the less serious forms of mood swing. The term manic-depressive is used for the more serious cases which at the poles of depression and hypomania or mania are serious enough to be considered psychosis. The time lapse between these poles can vary very widely from person to person and there can be periods of normality in between. In the early stages of the manic phase the patient simply feels good, buoyant, energised and can be genuinely very productive. As the condition proceeds though the patient experiences a “head like a can of worms” and cannot focus attention. Grandiosity is sometimes a feature of the hypomanic phase with the patient adopting an air of supreme confidence, social boldness and careless spending. This can make the person seem charismatic to others who seek to feed off that confidence and aura of success. The No-Win DilemmaFace a firing squad, or be hung? Sometimes life puts us in a situation of having to choose between alternatives none of which offer us escape from unpleasantness. One of my case histories resulted from a situation in which a very pleasant well liked man committed suicide. He had been carer for his disabled wife. None of their friends had ever guessed he was so depressed and filled with psychological pain he would even consider suicide. One can only speculate on his thinking. He might have felt himself to be trapped with no honourable way out. In suiciding, his wife was still left to find care plus having to cope with the psychological misery of totally unjustifiable self recriminations. When we get into a very anxious and depressed negativistic state we not only catatastrophise (a neologism used by American psychiatrist Albert Ellis) but our thinking and creativity becomes grossly restricted. We cant see the obvious and we become prone to fixed pie thinking. A parable to explain what I mean: Two sisters argued over an orange. They finally decided to end the argument by cutting it in half, each accepting just half of what she really wanted. Only then did they discover that one of them only wanted the juice for a drink and the other only wanted the skin to grate for a cake. It is no accident that Fritz Perls, an American psychiatrist famous for training psychotherapists made a training film entitled The Philosophy of the Obvious. When we are depressed or anxious not only does our vision and creativity become very restricted i.e. we get tunnel vision, but easy tasks look too hard to face up to we suffer lowered ego strength. In situations like this it very important to get professional help. A psychologist can help you by boosting your ego strength which can put an end to procrastination enabling you to find the strength to do what has to be done, and help you with problem solving strategies. The Curved Ball Shattering news from the doctor, or from a knock on the door: Everything Ive said about dealing with the no-win dilemma applies here. Dont go it alone! Existential Neurosis I used to call this ageing intellectual depression but in reality one doesnt need to be either ageing or an intellectual to suffer this kind of depression. Only a few text books mention this kind of neurosis as it does not fit squarely with official diagnostic syndromes. It was described by S. R. Maddi in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1967, vol. 72. It involves in essence (a) a sense of meaninglessness and an inability to believe in the truth or value in anything one is doing or can imagine doing a sense of the pointlessness of everything, (b) apathy interspersed with depression. Sufferers may see themselves as being nothing more than realists and support the view with virtually irrefutable logic. The approach I take in helping to deal with this debilitating and life draining condition is essentially the same as that taken by the famous irascible psychiatrist Albert Ellis in dealing with guilt: Basically, we are either going to continue living or we arent and if we are then we might as well go about trying to get some satisfaction out of it. There are constructive things one can do instead of beating oneself up or bemoaning the essential futility of everything and all existence. Even if intellectually you sees life as an exercise in futility this is of no comfort to someone else who might be suffering in some way, and could benefit from your talents, time and efforts. Another famous existentialist American psychiatrist, Victor Frankl (Mans Search for Meaning) learned in Auschwitz the vital, life saving importance of helping people to find at least one thing in life that is worth staying alive for. Advanced age has always been associated with depression and the connection might often be largely biochemical. Every age has it upside and downside. The youth suicide statistics suggest that although we like to remember our youth as our halcyon days in fact, being young comes with its own particular problems as well as benefits. And this is just as true for our older years when we get to enjoy the benefits that were out of range in youth. At every age we have a choice as to where we focus our minds. We can revel in the benefits we enjoy, or wallow in the problems and the gloomy side of things. What causes depression? Brain chemistry and genetic predisposition have already been mentioned as an explanation at the physiological level. At the psychological level depression is caused by: (a) Loss: the loss or expected loss of something valued, or similarly a feeling of having missed out on something valuable at sometime in the past; or, (b) Lack of positive reinforcing feedback i.e. having gone too long without experiencing the pleasure of success - everything I try turns to muck! Im a born loser, or, (c) Stress in not being able to cope with environmental pressures. Knowing the above provides the clues as to how best deal with depression. An atavistic theory of depression: According to this theory depression is a natural survival mechanism to ensure we dont expend precious energy on futile or dangerous activity. If the landscape is covered with snow, there are no fruits or berries around and game animals are hard to find, or if this is the season of too many flesh eating dinosaurs in our vicinity, then maybe the wisest thing we could do is huddle together around a campfire in the back of our cave and in between sleeping enjoy grouching about our rotten luck and how nothing these days is as good as it used to be! Depression according to this scenario is a sort of energy saving hibernation. Of course there are other, more scientific theories including learned helplessness a concept explained by famed Harvard psychologist Martin Seligman who found dogs could learn to accept helplessness even in the face of pain and would do nothing to help themselves even when the opportunity was available to them. But sometimes depression, especially the more serious forms, may have physiological issues as their primary cause. What can you do about depression? Well, the simplest starting point, especially if you think you have a serious form of depression is to go see your doctor. You can also try to help yourself. For detailed guidance on this you can get my self help course (link below). Basically, start by trying to identify the source of your depression. It might stem from an unhappy situation at home, finances or from events in the past that have left you with a sense of outrage or of having missed out on something due to you. To help you look for the source of depression you can keep a diary and note down what was going on when your bout of depression started, i.e. look for triggering events and circumstances. Tackle any tasks that you have not attended to due to procrastination. If youve identified problems or tasks hanging over your head get started on dealing with them. You can also make a conscious effort to do the things one tends not to do when depressed pay attention to personal grooming and the tidiness of your home and office. Make an effort, despite perhaps not feeling like it, to socialise, catch up with people you havent seen in a while. And providing that you discuss it with your doctor you could try naturopathic preparations. Love and Acceptance is the Best Discipline for Teenagers

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Claudia Apfelthaler Being a mother is quite an adventure I dare say. Its a challenge too. No body on this earth has made me discover the emotions within me like my twin teenage daughters. I have gone from feeling such tender and exquisite love to hostility. I remember the discipline with which I was raised. It wasnt overly strict but my dad did give me hidings when I refused to listen or give him back chat. It didnt stop me from keeping my mouth shut, in fact it just made me angrier that kids were treated like inferiors, like they didnt know anything. How often did I hear, Im a lot older than you and you have no experience. Two twin girls aged 13 going on to 25 is well, to say the least daunting at times. I have to get into real self discipline so I dont succumb to their level to get my point over in an argument. Oh my, what a reflection of myself when my kid, stands there with hand on hip lecturing me about which washing powder to use to get a stain out of her white blouse. She says things like, Mama you really should watch more TV so you can see whats going on in the world. I never watch TV. But I do watch myself and I do watch my girls and its amazing how much of myself I recognise in them. I always know what part of my thinking and personality needs fine tuning just by watching them. That hand on hip thing, is from me. That disapproving tone of voice also comes from me. What is even more frightening is when I realise I am being like my mother! The other day I caught a glimpse of myself in the bath room mirror whilst nagging my kids to hang up their towels and clean up after a shower. How many times have I made silent vows to myself to not nag? I remember what it was like having a nagging mother. It did not help, not one bit. In fact the more she nagged the more I didnt care about wet towels on the floor. I remember exactly those moments when I was thirteen and my mom just seemed to be the perfect square. I recall thinking to myself I will never be like that. And what do you know? There is me in all my mothers glory. Ive noticed what works really well is to give compliments. Even if your child is standing in front of you rolling eyeballs and looking totally bored say something like, Hey I forgot how lovable you are when you do that. I mean remember when they did all those things when they were 2. You thought it was cute then. Now just because the child has grown and speaks for it self you think its cheeky. When my twin girls were born I couldnt wait for them to begin talking. I was so excited to find out what was going through their heads. I remember the first time they saw a naked man they named his private parts a swing bum! And they used to call me Mamela because my best friends name was Pamela. And the names for my parents were so apt. They called my Dad Big Papi and my mom Baby Mami Papi. I have no idea where they got that from, but it was very cute and heart wrenching. Kids are so wonderful and uninhibited. To experience more joy just give them more love even if youre itching to say something mean. I know its not so easy to adore them every moment of the day, especially when they come home from school with friends you dont really approve of. The best way to deal with this is to love the friend and treat it like your own. I treat all the kids that come here like my own. Ive seen everything from the good mannered to the absolute uncouth. I know that even the uncouth got some of that from home and cant help it. And some of them well you know, its cool to be that way. Im always glad that my children feel so comfortable in their home that they have no qualms about introducing square me to the coolest of the coolest. That way Im always in the big picture. I get to see whos who in the zoo, and that is priceless knowledge for any mother with teenage kids trying out their own way. Claudia Apfelthaler loves life. How To Lose Thigh Fat Fast!

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Brian Bonito Thigh fat can be unsightly. Thigh fat can be a source of tremendous anguish. Millions of people are overweight. Fact: people, in general, are judged by the way they appear to others. Life can be cruel that way, which is why we our brains are hard-wired to believe that we need to be thinner and more attractive, and our obsession with losing weight grows bigger and bigger. The great part about shrinking your thighs is that number one, it can be done. And number 2 the fat on your thigh is connected to one of the largest muscles in the body. Your legs. And since your legs can be worked hard and often, losing thigh fat (and any fat for that matter) can be done quickly. If you have not begun, start your program with walking. A good brisk walk not only gets the oxygen flowing, it gets your leg muscles prepped. It allows you to slowly integrate bodys ability to do more physical activity. It stimulates your metabolism, which is what you need to lose the thigh fat you desire. Once youve been walking (I always recommend 20-30 minutes a day to start) for a while, you should notice an increased ability to do more. At this point find a place where you can do small step-ups. If you stairs in your own house, use those, nothing fancy here. The goal is to just make sure you do them. Try 20 steps alternating each leg. This should not be too taxing, but it will make those thighs work harder. You will begin to feel as if you can produce more results. Thats the trick for how to lose thigh fat, or any fat. Set yourself up for success by doing small things first. After several weeks prepping your thighs (and body) join a local health club and begin integrating the many leg and upper body machines into your workout regime. It doesnt matter how much you weight now. It doesnt matter how much weight you need or want to lose. It doesnt matter how many weight loss failures youve experienced in your lifetime. If you ease into a thigh reduction (weight loss) program, you can lose as much weight as you decide. Just get in there, head first, and give your best effort. Weight loss is a decision you make. You make it everyday of your life whether you realize it or not. The great part is once you do realize that the way you look and feel is completely up to you, and not some outside source, then weight loss and thigh shaping becomes so much easier! Florida Personal Injury Claims

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Eric Morris The first thing that must be done before jumping into a personal injury claim is to have a good understanding of what is meant by a personal injury and on what grounds one might claim compensations for the wrongdoing. Personal injury can result from the use of dangerous or defective products. “Products liability” law refers to the rules governing a manufacturer or other provider’s liability for products that harm consumers and workers. First, you must have suffered an injury to your person or property. Second, you should consider whether your injury was the result of someone else’s fault. It is not always necessary to have a physical injury to bring a personal injury lawsuit. Personal injury claims are often based on a variety of non-physical losses and harms. In the case of an assault for example, you do not need to show that a person’s action caused you actual physical harm. However, you must show that you expected some harm to come to you. You also may have a case if someone has attacked your reputation, invaded your privacy or inflicted emotional distress upon you. Injury claims are important enough to get the monitory support to heal and cure ones injury. Usually, it is claimed as a compensation for the misdeed one has practiced over the victim. Florida personal injury attorneys are the right people with their experiences and knowledge to get you your dues for a personal injury. Your protection is important and an experienced attorney can just do that for you. He or she can get claims you never thought of claiming. All you need to do is to select the right personal injury attorney if you happen to injure yourself in Florida. They take care of the rest. Florida Personal Injury Lawyers provides detailed information about florida personal injury lawyers, florida personal injury lawsuit funding, florida personal injury law firms, florida personal injury laws and more. A Little Red Wine Could Take You A Long Way!

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Lawrence Stepanowicz Longevity interests a lot of people who aren’t ready to give up their lives, just yet, and who look to healthy alternatives to culturally defined eating patterns and “health care.” The benefits of drinking wine have been touted for a while and are thought, by some, to be the reason why the French can get away with eating a high fat diet while enjoying a low rate of coronary disease. A few years ago, a study by French research team also found that men who regularly drank at least two glasses of wine daily were 50 percent less likely than non-drinkers to suffer a second heart attack. Previous studies with yeast, a small species of worm, and fruit flies have shown that resveratrol — a polyphenol antioxidant found in grapes, especially red grapes, and particularly pinot noir grapes which are grown in northern latitudes and used in wines coming from New York, Washington, and Oregon — is a life-extending compound. In a new study from Italy, resveratrol has been used to increase the life span of a short-lived breed of tropical fish by more than 50%. Not only did fish given resveratrol in their food live longer than the control group, they stayed livelier as they aged and displayed better memory in stimulus/response tests. And the neurons in their brains didn’t decay as quickly when they died and were dissected. Resveratrol, an organic compound contained in the skins of grapes that protects them from disease, is extracted from grapes by the wine making process. The wine becomes a preservative for the resveratrol and prevents its oxidation. That’s why drinking grape juice or eating raisins doesn’t have the same effect; the resveratrol has neither been extracted nor preserved. It’s also been shown that resveratrol in food supplements oxidizes upon exposure to air and loses its effectiveness. Red wine may truly be a “wondrous drug!” Other studies have shown that wine, especially red wine, can help prevent colds, increase the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, reduce the size and number of fat cells in the body, reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and has anti-inflammatory properties to boot. Drug companies are trying to copy resveratrol, but might not be able to preserve it’s health-preserving benefits. Besides, resveratrol is freely available in red wine and not patentable as such. —————————- Dr. Lawrence Stepanowicz is a Doctor of Naturopathy and writer on health topics. What Is A Contrite Heart?

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Mark E. Baker A contrite heart, a broken heart, a humble heart, these are just different ways of saying the same thing, but they can also have different meanings and its important to understand the difference, so as to avoid confusion. What is a contrite heart? What is true humility in the Bible sense? Ive heard Christians pray God break me and make me into what you want me to be. I understand what they are saying, but when you look at the Word of God, you see that God wants a whole vessel that can be used unto His honor. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our redemption. He died so that we can be whole spirit, soul, and body. A broken water pitcher wont hold water, and cant be used for the masters use. So my question is, what is true Bible humility, what does the Bible mean when it is talking about a broken heart? Lets look to the Word of God as always for the answers. Ps:34:18. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. 19. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all. In this instance the Word broken means,– crush, destroy, hurt, quench, tear. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, or a crushed or hurt heart. When the righteousness have been hurt the Lord is there to deliver them. The Lord is not the one doing the crushing and destroying He is the one doing the delivering. Jesus said, in John 10:10. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. In this instance there is deliverance out of the condition of brokenness. As vs. 19 goes on to say: Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all. This gives the sense of there being healing and wholeness in Gods deliverance. Psalms 51:17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart These, O God, You will not despise. In this case contrite means, — Grieving and penitent for sin. God does not despise a broken heart, this is true humility, and its the first step to real forgiveness and cleansing. Real forgiveness only comes when you humble your heart before God. God does not do this for you, the Holy Spirit will draw you to the love of God, but you have to receive it. Micah 6:8. He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? In Micah it says walking humbly with, you see in this case it is not talking about a crushed or bruised spirit, it is talking about walking with God, or in cooperation along with God. When you are walking under someone elses authority, you have their full backing and support. One example of this would be a police officer who is directing traffic. He doesnt on his own have the power to stop a car but he has the authority granted him by his local govt. or municipality to stop cars, doesnt he? We all have authority we have to submit to, whether we like it or not, whether it be the traffic cop or our boss, without it there would be chaos. The highest authority we have to submit to is God. His authority is the ultimate authority we all have to submit to, either now or later! The Word of God tells us every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is lord to the glory of God the Father. (Phil:2:11).When I think of humility, I think of submitting to a greater authority. Or putting yourself in a place of subservience to, as in 1 Peter 5:6. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7. casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. This is not talking about a master and a slave, this is talking about walking under the authority of a caring Father. Theres a huge difference! It is saying here to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, or putting ourselves under His authority. He is telling us to do this so that He can exalt us, however He cant exalt us unless we put ourselves in a place where He can do it. Its His desire to exalt us, but we must do our part. Hes already done His part through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. How can we truly submit to God, what do we have to do? This is a straight foreword question that we all would like to know the answer to. We have to submit to His Word. His Word is His written will to us all. Gods Word is Gods will. You can not truly get to know God or know His will unless you read His Word. It is scriptural to ask God to give you a desire and a hunger for His Word, if you are earnest, you will get it. Jesus said in the gospel of Matthew. Matthew 5:6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. It didnt say they might be filled, it said they shall be filled. It starts when you acknowledge you dont have the answers, but recognize He does. I dont have all the answers but Gods Word has all the answers, and as I learn of Him, and submit to His will, he will lift me up. It is an act of your will to submit, and it is also in your best interest. God always has our best interest in mind. His desire is to see us healthy and prosperous, as the apostle John wrote by the unction of the Holy Spirit, 3 John 1:2. Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. This doesnt sound like the ravings of a mad dictator, this is the desire of a loving and caring Father. The Father always has our best interest in mind, always! If we can acknowledge that, it makes it a lot easier for us to submit to Him. Once you learn to trust God you will wonder why you never did in the past. He loves us more than we can comprehend. Jesus said in Matthew,Matthew 11:29. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” He is saying for us to take on His yoke, and learn of Him, He is gentle and lowly of heart, and that is the place where we find rest for our souls. If you only knew the true peace that comes when you enter into Gods rest, you would never want to leave. His Word tells us to labor to enter into that rest. Hebrews 4:9. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. 11. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience. Entering Gods rest is being obedient and submissive to His will. The Word is telling us to be diligent to enter that rest. Rest is much better than works, rest is flowing with God, and walking with Him under His authority. Ive been on both sides, and rest is better, even if it is a labor to get there, rest is better, learning of God and partaking of His fellowship and His life and His love is a life changing experience that you can only experience when you submit to Him. How about it?Are you willing to take the first step. The first step is to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and savior. If you dont know Him I would like to invite you to pray this prayer. Dear Heavenly Father,I come to you in the name of Jesus.Your word says, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. (Jn.6:37),So I know You wont cast me out, but You take me in,And I thank you for it. You said in your Word, “whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Ro. 10:13).I am calling on Your name, So I know You have saved me now,You also said, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. (Ro.10:9,10).I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.I believe He was raised from the dead for my justification. And I confess Him now as my Lord,Because Your Word says, with the heart one believes to righteousness and I do believe with my heart,I have now become the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Cor. 5:21),And I am saved! Thank You, Lord!I can now truthfully say, I see myself as a born again child of God! Glory to God!!!! Amen. I was raised Catholic, and was born again at the age of 17. I received God’s call into ministry at the age of 19 and began to prepare for ministry. I graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in 1979. The Lord has called me to teach. By Steve Last Some may wonder what is marriage? To some marriage means belonging to one person and one person only. Others look at marriage as something much more sacred that just belonging, it is when it brings two souls together as one. Marriage might mean that they finally just cant live without the other in their life and want to spend every minute of the rest of their lives together. What is marriage and how is it different from the past? Today marriage is different from what it used to be like. Long ago getting married meant getting married at a young age, or saving your virginity until marriage. Today, you may wait until your 30 or 40s before ever attempting to tie the knot. As for being a virgin, most people are no longer virgins before they wed, but there are still some virgin brides. The courtships seem to last many years before you actually set a date and marry. Young lovers want to know they can live together and see what marriage will be like, they want to make sure theyve finished college and started jobs. What is marriage like with and without religion? This can be different for many people, if youve grown up with religion in your home and it was a very big deal it still will be and it is something youll definitely want in your marriage. However for those that never grew up with it they may not see the importance of having religion in the marriage or even in their life. Make sure you know what type of person you are marrying; if this is a key thing it will become a big issue for the wedding and after. Before getting married many may have a different view on the type of wedding ceremony you have. Someone may want a catholic wedding while others may think a protestant wedding is best, to avoid all conflict one may even choose not to have any type of religion at their wedding. If you plan on having a religious ceremony make sure you follow all procedures, sometimes a priest will want to meet with the happy couple for counseling before ever performing the wedding. What is marriage like when it is legal? Some couples wonder if they should even make their marriage legal or just stay living together. To some marriage is only something that is a piece of paper saying they are legally together. For those they may not want to have just a paper to tell them how important it is, especially if theyve already lived together for a few years. In a few states, couples that live together a certain amount of time, normally seven years or more, are considered to have a common law marriage. A marriage that is legal is one that is performed by a minister or someone that is qualified to perform the ceremony. Once the ceremony is complete the bride and groom will sign a piece of paper and a few weeks later get a certificate in the mail, in the meantime you will be given a document to show proof of marriage. So before you take steps to get married think about marriage think about what is marriage. You dont want to jump into a marriage because you thought marriage meant one thing and ended up being something entirely different, thats where divorce ends up coming in. Think long and hard about what is marriage and what it means to you. Dont forget to ask your loved one what is marriage going to mean to them. You wouldnt want to find out that the two of you have different views on marriage. Make your marriage a lasting one, after all thats what marriage should be - one that lasts forever. The Interviewer Is Watching You!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Tony Jacowski It is not for nothing that the experts advise you to take interviews seriously. The seasoned interviewer will be continuously watching your moves closely to evaluate whether he can put his money on you, in spite of your good academic performance. Complacency, lack of knowledge, aptitude and all behavioral traits will be noticed without you being aware of it, and along with your hard skills they determine your selection (or not) for the job. Your Speech Is Connected To Your Body Language Statisticians agree that 55-65% of all communications between people is through body language. Of this, about 30-40% is transmitted through voice modulation. This leaves us with just about 10-15% for verbal communication. This set of statistics goes to emphasize that interviewers depend at least equally on what they see if not more than what they hear. Interpreting non verbal behavior is a new but effective branch of science. If you didnt already know, it is the same science that detectives use in interrogations. Attempting to lie in interrogations or interviews will meet the same end because of your body language. No sooner than you attempt to lie, your body begins to give signals away of it via deceptive body language. Body Manifestations And Their Interpretations The manifestations of behaviors begin quickly in the form of restlessness and uneasiness of the subconscious mind. However, the physiology is such that it tends to oppose these abnormal stresses resulting in a build-up of stresses inside you. How will this manifest and will it show openly? The impulsive stresses begin surfacing as a non-stop shifting in your seat, avoiding eye contact with the interviewer, faint voice, changed facial expressions and finally a change tone of voice. As failing in a promising interview is probably the last thing you want, you will not want have any misconceptions or misguidance about the importance of your non-verbal behavior in job interviews. Hidden emotions can further worsen your case in the form of a dry mouth and eyes. But wait..it gets worse. The seasoned interviewer will be preparing to play his next card to check attitudinal changes by using delay tactics. Delay Tactics Tighten the Screws Just what are delay tactics? The interviewer may take a brief rest, or pauses between questions and answers to see whether he has done enough to sow suspicion in the mind of the candidate. A dishonest candidate can begin to stutter for words, which is an indication of deceptive attempts. The interviewer still needs conclusive proof of this before he makes his final assessment. The available evidence is still insufficient at this point. The interviewer can begin to test you with simple questions. Unsuspecting candidates usually suddenly relax and give up attempts to conceal facts. Some simple examples of such questions are dates of employment, etc. Now that you are aware how your body language can adversely affect your chances of succeeding in job interviews, you can pay closer attention to the way you behave. The next time you come across someone planning to deceive an interviewer, you know he is going to be easily exposed. Tony Jacowski is a quality analyst for The MBA Journal. What If Pheromones Really Do Work When It Comes to Attracting Women Part 2

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Teddy Shabba In the first article on pheromones I asked what if pheromones really worked as good as some people claim, where women all over you when you are wearing it. Now, I am going to ask the question what if pheromones really work but only a little bit. So instead of women being all over you no matter what you did it just gets women to notice you more. Without using pheromones women do not notice you and when you do use pheromones women think to themselves, “I like this guy I wonder what he is about.” Pheromones get you in the door, now what are you going to do to keep her from thinking; “You know I thought I liked this guy but obviously I don’t because the more I talk to him the more he seems like just another plain old boring guy.” When it comes to women you like are you comfortable with approaching them first? Do you know how to create attraction in a woman? If you answered no to either one of these questions then using pheromones to attract women is NOT going to do you any good, if pheromones only work a little bit. However, if you answered yes to both of these questions pheromones in many cases might help you attract more women. Once you have become good at approaching women and knowing how to create attraction in women pheromones might be able to take you to that next level in attracting women. Most men, however, buy pheromones thinking that it is going to help them approach and attract women. Yet, this would be like going Duck Hunting with the greatest Duck caller in the world and no gun. No matter how many you call none of them will fall.
