Wonder Why a Hiring Company Wants to Check Your Background?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Jan Maxwell Over 90% of companies run some type of background check on their job applicants. Pre-employment screening can be expensive and time-consuming, but most companies feel it is an essential part of the hiring process. Here are the top five reasons why a company will take a good look at you before making a hiring decision: 1. Fraud Its estimated that over half of all job applicants lie on their resumes and job applications each year. Education leads the list, with over half a million people in the U.S. falsely claiming to have college degrees. Many people enhance their job titles, stretch dates to cover employment gaps and even invent employers. By running a complete background check, a company can quickly verify if an applicant is telling the truth. Veritas asked CFO Kenneth Lonchar to resign following the discovery that his claim to an MBA from Stanford University was phony. George OLeary, hired as Notre Dames head football coach, lost his job when it was revealed that his resume contained falsehoods. 2. Criminal Activity No company wants to hire an individual who will bring crime into the workplace. Some two million Americans are victims of workplace violence every year. Many companies face theft, embezzlement and drug use by employees on a regular basis. In addition, the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have caused many employers to take a more careful look at their hires. A complete background check will usually let a company know if an applicant has a criminal record. Not all people with criminal records are hiring risks, but pre-employment screening allows the employer to make an informed hiring decision. 3. Negligent Hiring Lawsuits A company can be held responsible for the actions of its employees if it fails to conduct a background check prior to hiring someone. Lawsuits for negligent hiring are one of the fastest growing areas of litigation. Industry experts say that employers lose almost 80% of these cases. Seeking to protect themselves from multimillion dollar jury verdicts and enormous legal fees, companies are now very cautious about who them hire. They know that one bad hiring decision can dramatically hurt a companys finances and reputation. 4. Recruitment Expense Finding qualified applicants for a job costs time and money. Managers who are looking for new employees must spend their valuable time developing and placing ads, sorting through resumes and interviewing applicants. After a long recruiting process, a company wants to be sure that they have selected the right applicant. They dont want to repeat the process all over again. 5. Federal & State Laws Background checks are required for many state and federal jobs. For example, most states must run a criminal background check on anyone who works with the elderly, the disabled or with children. Many federal jobs require an extensive investigation for those trying to get a security clearance. Whatever the reason, the chances are excellent that a hiring company will want to look into your past. The best thing you can do is to be prepared when it happens. Weight Loss Setbacks and the “All or Nothing” Attitude

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Victor Holtreman I want to talk about the “all or nothing” outlook that is death to any attempt to lose fat and get in shape. You’re probably familiar with this concept… you might be rolling along making progress at losing fat for a few weeks when a holiday rolls around (typically Thanksgiving) or during the summer you have some company that comes to visit for a week. Suddenly the rules you’ve been following go out the window: There are goodies all around, and with all the friends and family there’s no time (or thought) given to working out. Next thing you know, you look at the scale and you’ve put on two, three or four pounds over the course of a week or two. Weight that you worked so hard to lose, and took you probably twice that long to take off. Your first reaction is probably to say “The hell with it, what’s the point?” and go back to your old ways, and for good measure you probably end up even more overweight than where you started. Believe me, that’s completely understandable. The problem is that although the human body is a miraculous thing, it can also be brutally unforgiving when it comes to staying in shape. You can lose months of hard won fitness in a couple of weeks. I’ve always been big on analogies, and here’s a simple one that I personally use when I “fall off the wagon” as far as diet and working out: Instead of looking at a setback as a total car wreck, look at it as just a minor fender-bender. You see, although the body can be unforgiving, it also has memory, and if you get back to your regime you’ll find that you will bounce back and reach your prior level of fitness/weight much faster than it took to get there the first time. So the next time you backtrack and put on a couple of pounds, don’t throw your hands up in dismay. Instead, do an “Indiana Jones”: Put that hat back on, pull down that brim, get that determined look back in your eye and get back on track! Victor Holtreman is the author of Lose the Last 10 Pounds, an eBook which chronicles his 2 month journey from 13% to 9% body fat using kettlebells. Dating After 40: The 60-Day Relationship Review

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By R.L. Morgan Most companies require new employees to undergo a 30, 60, and/or 90-day review to discuss how they are doing at their job. Typically part of the discussion is how well the employee thinks s/he is doing and what s/he likes and doesnt like about the job. The boss then shares how she thinks the employee is doing, what is working and what needs improvement. I think relationships should have a 60-day (or 90-day) relationship review. This way both parties could get a reality check on how s/he sees the relationship in comparison to the other. Both people could answer the questions, first on paper, then sharing their answers with the other. Some sample questions could be: On a scale of 1-10, how well do you think the relationship is going, considering weve been seeing each other for 2 months? What do you feel is going well? What would you like more of? What would you like less of? What would it take for this relationship to be a 10 for you? Do you think we should continue seeing each other? You are not asking for a commitment, but honestly assessing and sharing how each other feels. If there is a big disparity you rate the relationship an 8 and he gives it a 4 then time to decide if the gap can be closed and what it would take to close it. You may learn that what he needs for it to be a 7, 8, or 9 are things you cant provide. Maybe he wants to be with you 5 days a week and your schedule wont accommodate that. Or maybe youll discover other discrepancies. You can then discuss them and make a mature decision whether to continue seeing each other or not. Some people dont want to have this discussion because they think it will upset the apple cart and drive the guy away. My attitude is if having a conversation like this after dating for 2 months would drive him away, then youre better off without him. The value of having this review is that you can see how you both feel. And if you need to move on, best to know now rather than waiting another 2 months. R.L. Melt that FAT Away!

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Gillian Tarawhiti Ok, melting fat…conjures thoughts of some horrible torture method that might involve vats of boiling water or being hung over open flames. Well thankfully it has nothing to do with either. Have you ever heard of METABOLISM? The dictionary term means The physical and chemical processes by which substances are produced or transformed (broken down) into energy or products for the uses of the body. Basically speaking metabolism is the speed at which your body produces energy. The faster your metabolism, the faster your body does everything, especially BURNING OFF EXCESS FAT. You may have conditioned yourself to believe that you cant lose weight because you have a slow metabolism. Let me tell you once and for allTHATS RUBBISH! Your metabolism changes throughout your life and this is dependant on how you eat and use your body. Lets for a moment divert for a second from metabolism and lets talk about diets. Those who have read my previous article on this topic know that I am not a fan of dieting. I have said it once before and I will say it again, DIETS MAKE YOU FAT! To diet means the act of restricting your food intake (or your intake of particular foods). Now how does this fit into metabolism. Its like this, if you starve your body (which is what diets are about) then your body goes into self-preservation mode and will start to compensate by shutting down your metabolism. It wants to conserve energy, this is why you start to feel sluggish and completely uninterested in exercise or any other physical activity. When this happens the body will instinctively start to take fat from anything you put in your mouth and store it. Even if you are not dieting but arent eating properly such as missing meals etc. Then you too fall into this category. By missing meals you arent doing your body any favors once again the body feels like it is in starvation mode and will start to take fat from everything you put into your mouth and store it instead of burning it. You body once again wants to conserve energy, this is why you start to feel sluggish and completely uninterested in exercise or any other physical activity. Ok so now down to MELTING THAT FAT AWAY you simply need to understand the 3 reason why we fail at dieting and diets make you fat. Start melting that fat away today, give up on diets. What You Should Know About Adoption

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Michael Russell Adoption is the legal process of establishing a parent-child relationship where usually there is a non-existent natural relationship between them. In short, a child born from one set of parents becomes a child of another set of parents through legal means. After adoption, the adoptive parents assume all the rights and responsibilities that the biological parents used to hold. Adoption is usually done by a married couple to a minor who is not their natural child. In England for instance, an unmarried mother may adopt her own child so that the inheritance rights of her child are assured. Records show that in the United States almost half of all the adoptions are by relatives. Mostly these adopted children are born in wedlock while four out of five children adopted by strangers are born out of the bonds of marriage and are illegitimate. The United States has the highest percentage of white mothers who give their illegitimate child for adoption as compared with other countries. It has been observed that adoption agencies find it difficult to place older children, handicapped children and children of Negro or mixed race for adoption. Prompted by this reality, in 1957 a Montreal adoption agency pioneered a program that places part Negro children in white homes. Since then, similar efforts have been followed by several cities in the United States and Canada. There are two legal ways in which a couple desiring to adopt a baby can do so. First, they can go and apply to an adoption agency. The agency will assist them in looking for a child to adopt and who matches with their physical characteristics and background. The couple is screened by the agency’s social worker and their capacity for parenthood is assessed. The couple should have a stable marriage and they should exhibit the capacity to love a child. These are the two basic rules a couple must adhere to in order to be granted adoption rights. But aside from these basic rules, most agencies require couples to follow additional guidelines and requirements. These include: 1. A proof of infertility that should be provided by the applicant since most adoption agencies require this, especially if the couple wants to adopt a white infant. 2. They should live within a specified geographic area. 3. They should belong to a church. 4. They should be under a maximum age. 5. The wife should be able to take care of the child. Because some of these criteria have been attacked through the years as having little validity, now the requirements are becoming more accommodating. Second, they can adopt a child directly from the natural parents by what is known as “independent adoption”. Both these two methods of adoption go through judicial approval. Some couples engage in illegal placement referred to as “black market babies”. This involves the paying of money for the child whether directly to the natural parents or through an intermediary who arranges the placement. Adoption can bring a new meaning to life for both to the child and the new parents. The child can fill the void in the adoptive parent’s lives and the adoptive parents can fill the child’s longing for loving parents that can nurture him or her physically and emotionally. With a Christmas loans you can easily pay for the common Christmas expenditures on: New dresses Party Home improvements Vacations and many more Plan your spending: Christmas loans give cash to the borrowers according to which they can plan their purchase and spend accordingly. Unnecessary spending can further lead to shortage of money even after taking the loan so plan before you spend. Know your credit score: Credit score is something of the interest of the lender. The lender considers your credit score while deciding the interest rate for the Christmas loan. So, it is beneficial for you to get your credit score from the credit rating agencies. These agencies are Experian, Equifax and Transunion. Christmas loans are totally available through on line option where you can take the help of Christmas loan calculators to compare the online quotes available. The Butterfly Effect: How Small Changes in your Life Lead to Massive Reactions

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By H. Bernard Wechsler The Butterfly Effect Have you figured-out the secrets of speed reading? When you consciously-practice moving your eyes left-middle-right, it simultaneously causes your brain to shift-attention from the beginning, center and final-section of the sentence - instead of reading-across at one-word-at-a-time. Peripheral-vision (lateral-left and lateral-right), - causes a habit to be installed in your brain that changes your reading-speed from one-word-at-a-time, to triple that, three-words-at-a time. Dr. Maurizio Corbetta, Washington University School of Medicine, is the researcher who used fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery), to show that the same parts of the brain move both our eyes - and shift our focus of attention. This means the same parts of our brain that control eye-movementssimultaneously control what we pay attention to. Control your eye-movements and you govern your attention-and-concentration and triple your reading-speed. Crunching is Speedup! Chunking each sentence into three-sections, and crunching-words (running-them-together), cause a reduction of up to 66% in subvocalization. When we reduce mentally-hearing each-and-every-word we read to hearing only every second or third word by crunching (jamming), the words together we save up to an hour of reading time daily by speed reading. Your Pacer Using a your pen as a pacer to underline each sentence you read reduces regressions by 80%. Our eyes follow the trace-flow of the pacer (persistence of vision), and we do not lose our place on the page. The pacer causes our eyes and brain to integrate with the speed of our dominant-hand moving the pacer - to triple our reading speed. The pacer almost eliminates regressions rereading sentences. The first-step, the baby-step, the essential introduction to speed reading begins and ends with using a pacer. Using your pen to underline each sentence you read is the sine qua non (indispensable step) for speed reading. The First Step Starts the Ball Rolling Lets start with the answer and work backwards. Small changes lead to massive reactions, the basis of the Butterfly Effect, by professor Edward Lorenz of MIT. Google the law of Chaos - under physics. Call it baby-steps, but what is worth remembering is that all personal-growth begins with a single-change. Your choice-of-career begins with the baby-step of believing you can. Choosing a significant-other commences with a sight, touch orsound that touches-your-heart. And the first-step in speed reading is consistently using a pen-as-a-pacer whenever you read for career or pleasure. Volition It is volition choosing, making a decision and acting on it - the act of exercising your will - that is the beginning of every significant-event in your life. a) if you want to learn something new (an idea, word or principle), you have to create an association between something we already know, and the new, new thing. You used the alphabet and typing to learn to become an expert on your computer and then to surf-the-web. b) if you want to permanently remember ideas, names or dates, mental-imagery (mind-symbols), is your personal-tool for installing long-term memory. Tsunami has stickiness because her Nami is Sue. c) if you want to reduce subvocalization (mentally hearing each word you read), because it slows you down to a crawl you choose to read sentences with your foot on the acceleration, and off the brake. We call it crunching, ignoring the space-between-words, and crunching the words together. If you train yourself by subvocalizing the phrase Speedup! each paragraph, and later every-other paragraph until it becomes a habit - your brain automatically ignores the spaces between words, and compresses the flow of words. You still read and comprehend each and every word (it is not skimming), but read twice or three-times f-a-s-t-e-r. The Butterfly Effect In 1972, at a meeting in Washington, D.C., Dr. Edward Lorenz of MIT, presented his scientific paper to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that continues to echo in the twenty-first century. It was called: Predictability: Does the flap of a butterflys wings in Brazilset off a tornado in Texas? Picture it in your mind for long-term storage.Dr. Lorenzs subject was chaos theory, and how it affects our physical universe, and specifically the predictability of weather. His analogy is the butterflys flapping of its wings creates a disturbance in the chaotic motion of the atmosphere so that long-term behavior becomes impossible to forecast.Further, that simple systems of equations result in a pattern of infinite complexity.Lets get to the bottom-line: The Butterfly Effect stands for the proposition that -the slightest differences in one-variable have profound effects on the outcome of the whole system. Initial differences become magnified over time to produce dramatically different final-results!Speed Reading is Your ButterflyIf you choose to live into your nineties, and enjoy your time down here, you will be useful to other people by learning new stuff all-your-life. If we were related or best buddies, and you ask me the secret ofa subject I have studied for fifty-years the answer is - always read with a pacer in your hand. There are three types of Pacers that improve your eyes and your brain: your handheld laser-pen, an ordinary pen, and the cursor on your computer mouse. Your Brain is a Use-It-Or-Lose-It SkillIt begins anew every day when you pick up your pen to use as a pacer - underline each sentence you read at the office or for leisure. Using-your-pen-as-a-pacer continuously is the first-step, its the flapping-of-the-butterflys-wings, to reinforce the neuropathway (habit), of speed reading. For those who have to know where the feet-grow-from:your pacer activates your peripheral-vision, permitting you to expand your visual perceptual-span (located in your fovea-centralis, of the retina), from a mere six-letters, to a width of eighteen to thirty-five characters. That is the difference between reading one-word at a time to comprehending three-to-six-words at a time. It ends snailing, and begins the power of speed reading. Until We Meet AgainWhat does Dr. Lorenzs Butterfly Effect have to do with speed reading? Small changes lead to massive reactions, applies to all your dormant talents and gifts if you apply the Butterfly Effect. Speed readers enter into a cascade of personal-growth because they know they can read-and-remember enormous amounts of text. They have a dozen strategies and techniques to draw upon as self-help tools. Fear of the unknown is a non-starter, and replaced by self-esteem - based on recognition of your new cognitive-knowledge and talents. DWE We are all equal, but some of us are more equal than others. George Orwell Volition is choosing, and acting on your decision. She has two sisters, Intention and Attention, and together - they constitute DWE Directed Willful Effort your power of mental-force. Speed reading is a very practical step to becoming awareand developing your innate gifts-and-talents. Speed readers are auto-didactic(self-taught), and learn through trial-and-error, cause-and-effect, and stimulus/response. In the Knowledge Economy, the Information-Century speed readers rule because we use more of our gifts and talents. We plan ahead asking ourselves the magic-question What-if?, and having a Plan A, B, and C - because it gives us the competitive-edge. IntentionTell me - how do you know (at any age), that you cannot learn the guitar, paint like Picasso, climb Mt. Everest or be a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer unless you make that first small change in your life - and discover your latent gifts-and-talents? We encourage you to listen to your still, small voice; your mind wants you to exercise your volition. Remember back to when you read like a snail? It all begins with a burning-desire for change a decision, and acting on it. It works with speed reading, starting a new career, learning a foreign language, or initiating a relationship. Our suggestion is be useful in whatever you do and trust in the unfolding because small changes lead to massive reactions. Pleasures and Dangers of Rockhounding Abandoned Mine Areas

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Sally Taylor There is nothing quite like finding an abandoned mine site for the rock and treasure hunter. These areas, needless to say, are loaded with dangers, but when you go to a mine site with an awareness of the dangers, a clear head, and with common sense in full function, you can count on many hours of entertaining and, often, rewarding search. Tailings and site areas can contain a wide variety of mineral and gem material. Because minerswere basically interested in what they were mining for in particular, other materials were oftenoverlooked and discarded in the tailings. Some of the nicest crystals I have ever found havecome from mine tailings. I have also found tourmaline, garnet, sapphire and many other minerals. What you can find will vary by area, but you can often pick up some of the mined materials aswell. A caution about tailings is that they may contain the residue of mining chemicals, radiation, and sometimes, especially in gold mining areas, arsenic (arsenic is actually a metal found in rocksand can be very concentrated in gold mining areas). Tailings are not the only areas you want to hunt when looking for gem materials. Any smallravines under the mines will catch materials that roll downhill and are often ignored by hunters. Any railroad track areas leading from mining areas are great places to hunt for the mineral minedin that area as rocks would tumble from trains in transport. If you can find a spot that a train hasderailed and hunt downhill, you are bound to turn up quantities of mineral bearing rock on themountainside. Library news archives are great places to find old news articles about such events,so you may want to do some research if you are planning your trip out in advance. It is a goodidea to check with local Chamber of Commerces before heading out to the area. They can tellyou about restricted hunting areas or sometimes will know of good areas not listed on maps. They can also tell you if the rocks in that area contain any radioactivity before hunting in that areaor use scanning devices when you get there if you have one. Uranium might be valuable but youreally don’t want to unwittingly wallow in it. Artifacts are another great attraction in mining areas. It is not at all uncommon to find old coins, tools, and weapons in tailings and around the mining site. Sometimes you will get lucky and findmine camps with the remains of old buildings or miners cabins. Searching these areas can turnup all kinds of articles left or lost my miners. When hunting artifacts you want to check buildingwalls and floors, fireplace walls, and to the right and left of outside of doors as many times thesepeople buried or hid their belongings and caches in such spots. In cases of the ownersunexpected death, these items sometimes remain where they were hidden.Old buildings on or around mine sites can contain their own dangers, however. Many old minerscabins and buildings have mine shafts in the buildings. Stepping on old boards that cover theshaft can be a rude and final awakening for the careless hunter. Any time you enter an old cabin,be very careful about where you step. Make sure the boards are solid and that you have footingthat will allow you not fall through if a board should give out. Some of these shafts can runhundreds of feet straight down and don’t allow much hope of survival if you should fall into them. Ifyou see that a piece of flooring is noticeably different from the rest, or noticeably removable, donot step on it for any reason unless you can actually see that there is solid ground rightunderneath you. Never guess about this one as a wrong guess may be the last one you ever get. Old mining areas will invariably contain one or more mining shafts or a tunnel. These need to beavoided at all costs. Never step on a board over a mining hole. Even if a hole is filled in andlooks solid, it can’t safely be assumed to be safe. Sometimes enough debris will collect to makethe hole look solid, but you may get a very rude surprise if you step down onto it. Tunnels holdmany dangers and should not be explored no matter how safe they appear. There is no way tosmell cyanide gas, but you only have to inhale once for it to kill you. Many old gold tunnels are fullof this gas. False bottoms, bottoms that appear solid but are not, or unstable tunnel walls, beams, and ceilings are another danger. Tunnels are enticing, but your best and safest bet is tokeep your hunting to the the outside of the tunnel. If you have children or pets with you when youexplore near shafts and tunnels, you need to keep them under close supervision. By P.L. Fields Being able to adapt to situations is essential for “survival among the fittest.” Everyone encounters or lives with stress. It might be emotional, physical, or mental. Our bodies are designed naturally to cope with stress. The adrenal system does just that. This system is regulated by a gland on the top of each kidney and is accompanied by the sympathetic nervous system. These glands produce hormones that control bodily functions like stress regulation, growth, aging, blood-sugar control, just to name a few. Cortisol is a hormone associated with stress. Cortisol is elevated when your body is stressed. Cortisol has a very important relationship with blood-sugar regulations and fat-burning. These two functions may be highly affected if cortisol is not regular. Too much cortisol suppresses the immune system and can impair memory and contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. When someone is subjected to stress your adrenal attempt to battle the stress. If successful, the adrenals return to normal and during this stage your might get mild symptoms of tiredness, mild allergies, or some kind of nagging back, foot or knee pain. However, if adrenals fail to combat the stress the adrenal glands get larger and while combating the stress you might get even worse symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, or serious pain in your back, foot or knee. The last stage is extreme tiredness and in this stage the person usually becomes seriously ill either physically, chemically, or emotionally. Your body is equipped to handle bouts of stress, but under long periods of time the body cannot. This has much to do with health and fitness because a healthy body that can fight off stress with have an easier time becoming fit. If your body is busy fighting stress it will not be able to function properly during exercise. Exercise might make you feel even worse! It will be like trying to win a battle on two fronts. Common symptoms are low energy, dizziness, sensitivity to light, allergies, exercise “burnout”, diminished sexual drive and blood-sugar-handling stress (low blood sugar). Diet can often help adrenal stress. The most important thing involving diet to help adrenal stress is cutting out refined sugar. There are tons of hidden sugar in many foods (ketchup, bread, crackers, etc.). If you have adrenal stress or think you do, cut out the sugar (including those sugared drinks). Eating sugar raises blood-sugar levels too quickly causing insulin to be released, which in turns lowers the blood sugar. These two actions together are chemical stresses, which your adrenals have to deal with. Even consumption of refines carbohydrates and caffeine create this same action and creates or adds to adrenal stress. I had adrenal gland dysfunction for many years and it lead to my “chronic fatigue”. It was like having the flu everyday of your life. I slept 14 to 15 hours without any relief. I did not know about adrenal dysfunction and later found out it affected many millions of people. If you are having symptoms you have to start doing something about it now, because it only gets worse. It is often a major hurdle to overcome for most people trying to get healthy and fit. Help Me!
